An inquest heard that a Pakistani teenage boy who was fatally stabbed in the chest in the heart of Birmingham had an "unsurvivable stab wound to the chest."

On January 20, Muhammad Hassam Ali, 17, was stabbed in Victoria Square just before 3:30pm and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, according to Daily Mail.

Despite the doctors' best efforts, he passed away in the hospital three hours later.

According to a prior statement made by Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood of the West Midlands Police homicide unit, the "tragic" death seemed to be "a case of mistaken identity."

Muhammad's death was opened. It was revealed that the victim, who was born in Pakistan, was a student from Perry Barr.

A chest stab wound was determined to be the provisional cause of death following a post-mortem examination.

The police continued their criminal investigation while the proceedings were postponed.

The inquest heard that Muhammad's body has now been returned to his family for a funeral.

Senior Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull Louise Hunt declared: "The sad circumstances of this death are such that it was a violent death and therefore an inquest is required."

"Today I'm just going to deal mainly with who has died because the case will need to be adjourned pending the outcome of the criminal investigation."

After reading a statement from Karen Jones, the coroner's investigator, Hunt stated: "This confirms the deceased's full name is Muhammad Hassam Ali," he said

"He was born in Pakistan and was a 17-year-old student living in Perry Barr in Birmingham," he added

Hunt provided the following information about the events surrounding the teen's death: "West Midlands Police were called to Victoria Square, Birmingham city centre, to reports of a male having been stabbed."

"Police and ambulance arrived and sadly discovered that the deceased had been stabbed. He was treated at the scene and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where they tried to save him. Despite all the efforts of the medical team his injury was un-survivable and he died, sadly, at 6.41pm on January 20. A post-mortem examination was undertaken by a forensic pathologist. The provisional cause of death has been provided as stab wound to the chest," he said.

The coroner stated that the Crown Prosecution Service notified her that a charge had been filed.

A 15-year-old who is too young to be named legally was accused of both murder and possessing a bladed object.
