Jürgen Klopp has declared his decision to resign as manager of Liverpool at the end of the current campaign after notifying the club's owners that he intended to quit his job at the end of the 2023–24 season.
The 56-year-old will continue to manage the team through its remaining 2023–24 games before ending his illustrious eight-and-a-half years as manager of Anfield, which has seen the team win six major trophies under his direction. This comes after he led the Reds to another Wembley final on Wednesday night, according to Liverpool Football Club.
At the end of the season, elite development coach Vitor Matos, assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders, and Peter Krawietz will all leave their posts. Lijnders is eager to pursue a career in management.
In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp confirmed his choice and gave an explanation of why it was made now. He stressed the need of getting clarification as soon as possible to help establish the framework for a smooth transition to take place in due time.
He said, “I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it."
“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take," he added.
“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again."
“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth,” he said
On October 8, 2015, Klopp was named manager of Liverpool. That choice was going to completely transform the club and make it a major player both domestically and internationally.
Liverpool has won the FA Community Shield, UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Super Cup under his direction.
