A seemingly innocent suggestion by American scientist Michelle Francl has ignited a brewing controversy, drawing reactions from across the pond and even prompting a response from the US Embassy in London.

In her recently published book, "Steeped: The Chemistry of Tea," Bryn Mawr College chemistry professor Michelle Francl explores the intricate chemistry behind our beloved beverage. 

From exploring the nuances of different tea styles to tackling the perennial question of when to add milk, Francl's research-based advice promises a better cuppa. However, it's her unconventional recommendation to add "a pinch of salt" to tea that has the internet buzzing. 

According to Francl, the addition of salt to tea reduces bitterness, as the sodium ions in salt block the bitter receptors in our mouths.

The controversy reached new heights when the suggestion was discussed on Good Morning Britain, with the hosts expressing disbelief. 

On X, formerly known as Twitter, the clip from the broadcast garnered reactions like, "According to a US expert, adding a pinch of salt is the answer to the perfect cup of tea. This feels like a crime."

Even the US Embassy in London joined the conversation, humorously saying, "Today's media reports of an American professor's recipe for the perfect cup of tea have landed our special bond with the United Kingdom in hot water." 

They reassured the people of the UK that the idea of adding salt to tea is not official United States policy and joked about continuing to make tea "the proper way – by microwaving it."

The banter didn't stop there, as the UK government's account on X chimed in, asserting, "We must disagree wholeheartedly... Tea can only be made using a kettle."

In the midst of this tea-centric dispute, one thing is clear – the age-old tradition of tea-making has stirred up a passionate debate that transcends borders.
