Sabalenka aims to repeat history at Australian Open as she crushes Tsurenko
Aryna Sabalenka's formidable presence on the court continues to make her a force to be reckoned with in the Australian Open
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka crushed 28th seed Lesia Tsurenko 6-0, 6-0 in a blistering performance at the Australian Open on Friday.
The second-seeded Belarusian, who clinched her maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne last year, is on a quest to become the first woman since Victoria Azarenka in 2013 to successfully defend her Australian Open crown.
Wearing a vibrant red outfit, Sabalenka showcased unwavering intent from the outset on Rod Laver Arena, storming to victory in just 52 minutes. The 25-year-old expressed her satisfaction with the level of play, drawing inspiration from world number one Iga Swiatek's dominance in 6-0 sets last year.
Tsurenko, who entered the match with a 1-1 record against Sabalenka, found herself powerless against the Belarusian's devastating power. The Ukrainian managed a mere 11 points in the first set compared to Sabalenka's 27, and the story repeated in the second set. Despite having two points to get on the board in the second game, Tsurenko succumbed to Sabalenka's relentless pressure.
Sabalenka's impeccable form in Melbourne extends beyond this match. She breezed through the earlier rounds, losing only one game in the first round against German qualifier Ella Seidel and defeating 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. The Belarusian powerhouse has spent less than three hours on court over three matches, showcasing her dominance.
Looking ahead, Sabalenka faces unseeded American Amanda Anisimova in the fourth round. Anisimova, returning to Grand Slam action after an eight-month mental health break, poses a challenge that Sabalenka eagerly anticipates. The Belarusian expressed excitement for the upcoming battle, emphasizing the tough matches they have had in the past.
