It is often said that a glass of lemon water on an empty stomach in the morning can do wonders due to it detoxing abilities.
However, it turns out that the benefits of this vitamin-packed drink goes beyond as it boosts hydration.
According to registered dietician Kylie Bensley, while speaking to Vogue lemon water “amplifies the benefits of water, adding both mental and physical virtues.”
“While drinking water can help us hit our hydration goals, infusing water with lemon is a very simple, quick task that boosts the function of water itself.”
Additionally nutritionist Laura Parada listed the six main benefits of lemon water and detailed what the right way is to drink it.
A gut microbiome’s best friend
Parada shared that the use of this drink can fight a number of gut-related issues such as indigestion, gas formation, bloating, cpnstipation and heartburn as it encourages the production of gastric juices and bile.
“It helps kick-start the digestion process in the morning,” Parada said.
“[Lemon water] improves gut transit and hydrates the colon.”
Immune system’s firewall
Rich in vitamins and minerals, namely vitamin B, magnesium, calcium and more, lemon water bolsters the immune system which, by extension can lend to a healthier body.
Anti-aging cocktail
Lemon has a bank of antioxidants with additional benefits like boosting collagen and balancing low antioxidant levels in combination with other anti-aging advantages that as per Parada, “prevent damage from free radicals”.
Hydration nation
While water is the only drink of choice that helps one achieve hydration, adding lemon to it, as per the expert, can help one to hit their goals.
“[It] can give it a pleasant taste that makes [drinking plenty of water] easier,” says Parada.
Anxiety crusher
Lemon is more than just an experience for the taste buds. Studies have shown that using it as aromatherapy have benefits to in reducing anxiety and stress.
Possibly help with weight loss
While many view the use of lemon water as a means to reduce weight, Bensley insisted that the use of this citrus fruit would rather help with suppressing weight gain.
“So while it may not help lose weight through its chemical properties, it can suppress the risk of obesity,” she outlined.
As of yet though, there is not enough substantial evidence that indicates to the direct correlation of lemon water and weight loss.
