Lemon water has been all the rage across the world of wellness and while adding a squeeze of the acidic fruit has been known to have a string of benefits, there might be a chance that you’re doing it wrong.
According to nutritionist Laura Parada, while speaking to Vogue, a number of things can cause a decline in the effectiveness of lemon water or result in minimal benefits.
For starters, the temperature of the water is key.
Parada insists that water should not be hot but rather lukewarm as "being at the same temperature as our body, it is absorbed much faster since it does not have to lower its temperature to be digested."
Then, registered dietician Kylie Bensley told the publication that choosing the right lemon is also key.
As per the expert, the ideal lemon should be soft and have thin peel without any green colouration, ensuring a juicer fruit.
After selecting your perfect lemon, wash it before cutting it into circles to ensure more surface area for an extra vitamin C boost.
Additionally, you can add other ingredients like ginger, mint, sliced strawberries or any other ingredients of your choice.
Other things that can be beneficial is to add protein powder or sage to help with your skin.
In particular, when ordering lemon water at restaurants, Bensley recommends to ask for a wedge of lemon on the side to squeeze later in order to ensure that only the juice is in the water.
“This will help prevent bacteria on the fruit’s surface from entering,” she said.
As to how much is a healthy amount to consume, the expert said that using one to two slices in one glass of water is ample and if you feel nauseous after drinking it, it’s likely you’re overdoing it.
