Panthers owner fined $300,000 for stadium incident
David Tepper's penalty stemmed from incident where he threw a drink at opposing fans during their game against Jacksonville Jaguars
Carolina Panthers' owner, David Tepper, faced a hefty $300,000 fine from the NFL.
The penalty stemmed from an incident where Tepper threw a drink at opposing fans during their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Tepper's actions came amid a disheartening 26-0 defeat against the Jaguars, pushing the Panthers to an abysmal 2-14 season record, the worst in the NFL. Expressing regret, Tepper apologised for his behavior, acknowledging that he should have let stadium security handle any arising issues.
The incident unfolded after a critical interception by Carolina quarterback Bryce Young, sealing the defeat that confirmed the team's unfortunate status with the worst record in the league this season. Despite this, the Panthers' hopes of securing the top pick in the next NFL Draft were thwarted as they had traded away that selection last year to acquire Young.
Under Tepper's ownership since 2018, the Panthers have faced six consecutive losing seasons, tallying a meager 31-67 record. This disappointing streak contrasts starkly with Tepper's extensive financial success as a 66-year-old billionaire hedge fund owner. Notably, he also owns Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer.
The incident stands as a jarring point in a season marred by struggles for the Panthers. Tepper's fine, a substantial $300,000, underlines the NFL's stance on unacceptable conduct by team owners, emphasising the need for upholding decorum and respect within the league.
