Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, had his phones taken by the FBI, seemingly as part of a larger probe into campaign funding focused on teaming up with the Turkish government to get unlawful foreign funds as per the New York Times.

Investigators confiscated electronic devices on Monday night, which were reportedly two iPhones and an iPad.

Adams, 63, disputes any misconduct.

Boyd Johnson, an attorney representing the mayor's campaign group, claimed on Friday that Adams had been contacted by the FBI following an event.

"[He] immediately complied with the FBI's request and provided them with electronic devices," he told the BBC's US partner CBS. "The mayor has not been accused of any wrongdoing and continues to cooperate with the investigation."

In his own statement, Adams, a Democrat and former police captain, said: "As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully co-operate with any sort of investigation, and I will continue to do exactly that."

He continued, "I have nothing to hide."

Following an early-morning raid at the residence of Adams's primary campaign donor, the investigation was made public last week.

Former Adams assistant and lobbyist Brianna Suggs, 25, had her Brooklyn home inspected by the FBI. It is said that three iPhones, two computers, and a folder with the name "Eric Adams" were taken by agents.

Agent teams also conducted searches of other New York residences and establishments.

However, it seems that this is the first time that Adams has been personally involved in the inquiry since Monday night's devices raid.

Prosecutors are allegedly investigating if the Adams campaign colluded with the Turkish government or persons connected to Turkey to break campaign finance laws, according to a search warrant obtained by the New York Times.

In addition, investigators need to know if these donors received any advantages from the Adams campaign that were given back to the nation.

Contributions to US political campaigns are prohibited for foreign nationals.

According to law enforcement authorities with knowledge of the situation, who spoke to CNN, the FBI is reportedly looking into a scheme that would have concealed foreign payments under the guise of American individuals.
