The sales on the day after Christmas, also known as Boxing Day, are wild as it is known to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year. However, in recent years, some companies have chosen to close on December 25 and 26 in order to give their employees a well-earned day off with their families.
As customers have responded favourably to this move, more supermarkets and shops have since made the decision to do the same.
The Mirror has compiled a list of all stores, both supermarkets and retailers, that have so far announced to remain closed on Boxing Day this year.
This year on Boxing Day, Aldi, one of the UK's most famous chains of supermarkets will once again close all 1,000 locations. Richard Thorton, the head of communications at Aldi, verified the decision earlier this month in a statement.
According to Thorton's statement, Aldi acknowledged that Boxing Day was an "important time" for many of its employees, and by keeping their stores closed on that day last year, employees were able to spend more time with their families.
He added: "Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with more of Aldi’s brand-new Christmas ranges arriving in stores over the next few weeks.”
The discount supermarket chain, which is known for remaining closed for both Christmas bank days over the festive period, has also announced that it will be closing for New Year's Day this year too.
The chain has published its opening hours on its website, allowing shoppers to plan their Christmas and New Year's Eve plans accordingly.
The popular UK-based bargains chain, Home Bargains has announced its closure of all stores on Boxing Day and New Year's Day this festive season in a post shared on X, formerly Twitter.
The company also later confirmed that all its stores will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve. A statement released by the company mentioned it "was only right to support our valued store teams by giving them extended time off around Christmas and New Year".
Another high street retailer closing its stores for a longer length of time over the holidays is Poundland. The store stated last month that while it would be open on Christmas Day as usual, its stores would be closed on Boxing Day and New Year's Day as well.
For the fourth year running, employees at all 800 of its branches will receive additional time off.
People director at Poundland, Simon Wells, said of the move: "We really appreciate how hard our colleagues work during the year and closing the stores on these additional days over Christmas and New Year is our way of saying thank you to them — not least because this quarter has been especially busy with new store openings.
"Their efforts are appreciated and we hope they enjoy a well-earned break with family and friends over the festive period."
