Just over a year has passed since Spotify began offering audiobooks on its platform, and now its premium members have access to almost 200,000 titles with an option of an additional ten hours of listening for $12.99.
Now, those who pay for the service's ad-free access can listen to 15 hours of audiobooks per month. Before, using the Spotify app to obtain audiobooks required payment.
Spotify stated that the 15-hour restriction "should get you around two average audiobooks per month" in a press release introducing the additional benefit.
Bestsellers including "The Woman in Me" by Britney Spears and "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus are among the titles available to members, along with beloved works like "The Lord of the Rings" and "It" by Stephen King.
In fact, seven of the ten books that are now number one on the New York Times best sellers list for fiction and nonfiction can be streamed for free, according to a quick review by CNBC Make It.
The catalogue of available titles has been carefully selected by the streamer, including everything from first-time listener audiobooks to works that are suitable for commuting.
Currently, the premium version of Spotify is available for $10.99 for single users, $14.99 for pair accounts, and $16.99 for family accounts. Meanwhile, Spotify Premium is available to students for $5.99 a month.
According to a September Spotify poll, 72% of Gen Z and Millennials listen to audiobooks, and those who do so are more likely to remain around and consume more audio material (Spencer, 2017).
