Israel carries out strikes on homes in north Gaza as it extends onslaught
The Israeli military bombed at least five crowded homes in northern Gaza early on Thursday with many casualties, health officials said, as troops deepened an incursion along the territory's northern edge.
Rescue operations were under way as many people remained missing or trapped under the rubble, medics said. Hamas media put the number of fatalities at 57 but there was no official figure immediately from the Gaza health ministry.

The legislators voted 80-17 to reject the measure that would have stopped the sale of GPS guidance systems for bombs.
Earlier, the resolutions on tank and mortar rounds also failed by similar margins, reported Al Jazeera.

Hezbollah claims attacks on Israeli troops
Hezbollah fired multiple missiles at Israeli troops near the town of Khiam in southern Lebanon late on Wednesday evening, Al Jazeera reported citing the Lebanon-based group.
The group also claimed that it targeted Israeli troops in Samaka in the occupied Kfar Shouba hills just before midnight local time.

US Senate rejects move to block arms sales to Israel
The US Senate on Wednesday blocked legislation that would have halted the sale of some weapons to Israel, which had been introduced out of concern about the human rights catastrophe faced by Palestinians in Gaza.
As voting continued, 59 of the 100 senators opposed a resolution that would have blocked sales of tank rounds to Israel, while 15 supported it.

Turkey slams Houthi strike on its Panama-flagged cargo ship
Turkey's foreign ministry on Wednesday condemned a missile attack on the Panama-flagged and Turkish-owned cargo ship Anadolu S while sailing off the coast of Yemen by Iran-aligned Houthis.
In a statement, Turkish foreign ministry said that necessary initiatives are being taken to prevent the recurrence of a similar incident.

Hamas says US 'directly responsible' for Gaza war after UN veto
Palestinian group Hamas accused the United States on Wednesday of being "directly responsible" for Israel's "genocidal war" in Gaza after it vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire.
"Again, the United States demonstrates that it is a direct partner in the aggression against our people, that it is a criminal, kills children and women and destroys civilian life in Gaza, and that it is directly responsible for the genocidal war and ethnic cleansing, just like the occupation (Israel)," Hamas said in a statement.

Syria says 36 killed in Israeli strikes on Palmyra
The Syrian defence ministry said 36 people were killed and more than 50 wounded Wednesday in Israeli air strikes on the oasis city of Palmyra, renowned for its ancient ruins.
"The Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the direction of the Al-Tanf area, targeting a number of buildings in the city of Palmyra," a ministry statement said.
The attack "killed 36 people and wounded more than 50", as well as causing "significant material damage," it added.
