FIFA has officially rescinded the 18-month suspension imposed on the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), paving the way for the country's participation in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The decision comes just days before the draw for the African qualification competition for the 2026 World Cup is set to take place. As part of the resolution, an interim normalization committee will be appointed to oversee ZIFA until new management elections can be conducted.

Zimbabwe had been suspended by FIFA in February 2022 due to concerns about government interference in the affairs of the football association. The executive committee of ZIFA was dissolved in November 2021 by the Sports and Recreation Commission, a government-appointed body, amidst allegations of misappropriation of funds designated for Zimbabwe's participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

FIFA's Bureau of the Council announced the lifting of the suspension and the establishment of a normalization committee in a statement. The committee will be responsible for reviewing the ZIFA Statutes and Electoral Code to ensure compliance with FIFA's regulations and facilitating their adoption at the ZIFA Congress. Local administrator Lincoln Mutasa will chair the normalization committee, which has been given the mandate to fulfil its duties by June 2024.

The timing of this decision is crucial as the draw for the African qualifiers is scheduled to take place during the CAF Congress starting this week in Abidjan. The participation of Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifiers had been uncertain due to the suspension. With the suspension lifted, Zimbabwe can now prepare to compete in the qualifying matches, which are set to begin in November.
