After bringing the iconic Barbie to life, Greta Gerwig is set to bring forth two more featured film adaptations of the beloved Narnia franchise to Netflix, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
While no official announcement has been made, rumours had been swirling that Gerwig will be tackling a Narnia movie after she worked on Netflix’s Noah Baumbach-directed White Noise.
In 2018, Netflix announced that it had acquired the film and TV rights of the popular C.S. Lewis book series, The Chronicles of Narnia.
“Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said at the time.
Moreover, in a story about Mattel’s continuing Hollywood ambitions, the New Yorker reported that Gerwig has a deal to direct two films. The deal with Netflix emphasises the 39-year-old director’s inclination towards bigger-budget filmmaking, and her ambition to become a filmmaking powerhouse.
Still, the on-demand streaming service has not announced any plans to bring the world of Narnia to life.
Gerwig got her start when she first wrote and acted in an indie film before she moved into directing with the Oscar-nominated Lady Bird and Little Women.
Lady Bird netted five Oscar nominations, including best director and best screenplay.
Her upcoming Barbie movie is a pivot to pop as well as one of the most anticipated films of the year; it’s on track for a North American box office debut in the $80 million range, per THR.
