King Charles and Queen Camilla were crowned Saturday in a once-in-a-generation ceremony steeped in 1,000 years of history and tradition at London's Westminster Abbey.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual leader of the Anglican Church, slowly placed the 360-year-old St Edward's Crown on Charles' head as he sat upon a 14th-century throne in Westminster Abbey in front of a congregation of around 100 world leaders and a television audience of millions. After Charles, his second wife, Camilla was also crowned.
The 74-year-old monarch succeeded his mother as king on her death last year in September and the ceremony, although not essential, is a means to legitimise Charles in a public way.
After returning to their residence following the two-hour-long ceremony, King Charles appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with his wife Queen Camilla, heir to the throne Prince William and other senior royals but Prince Harry, the King's younger son, was absent.

The Coronation flypast, despite hiccups owing to weather conditions, managed to put on a spectacular show for the royals and the crowds gathered outside the Palace.
It started with five formations of helicopters, followed by the RAF Red Arrows.
The show marked the end of the official Coronation celebrations; royal revellers and the family itself will continue to celebrate over the weekend.

The Coronation flypast has been cut back by two thirds over unfavorable weather conditions over London, the UK Minister of Defence has confirmed.
The flypast, originally planned to be six minutes long, will now only last two minutes and 30 seconds as low cloud cover and drizzly rain means most of the aircrafts cannot take part.
It was originally supposed to feature more than 60 aircrafts from Royal Navy, British Army and the Royal Air Force, but now, the only aircrafts taking place in the flypast now are helicopters and the Red Arrows.
