March 05, 2008
PARACHINAR: Independent candidate for NA-37 Upper Kurram Agency Sajid Hussain Tori won the delayed election on the seat by securing 26,287 votes.

The polling was held on Monday after a delay of 15 days due to the uncertain law and order situation in the constituency following a devastating bomb explosion. The polling remained peaceful as strict security measures were taken and the Pak-Afghan border too was sealed to prevent miscreants from entering Pakistan and causing trouble.

Dr Riaz Hussain, another independent contestant, remained runner-up with 20,793 votes.

A total of 24 candidates were in the run. The registered votes in the constituency were 141,190. The polled votes totalled 87,296 with a percentage of 61.82.

As many as 123 polling stations had been set up in the constituency of which 26 were declared sensitive.

The polls had been postponed after a suicide bomb attack at an election gathering of Riaz Hussain in which 47 people were killed.

It is interesting to mention that six doctors and one engineer were also among the contestants.
