Lawyers stay away from courts

LAHORE

LAWYERS in the city continued their protest on Thursday for the 11th consecutive day after the imposition of emergency as they boycotted courts. Lawyers, few in number, started reaching the Lahore High Court Bar Association early in the morning and remained busy in discussing the current prevailing crisis in the country. They also predicted that after the release of remaining arrested lawyers, they would lock horns with the executive for arresting lawyers at massive scale and humiliating them. Meanwhile the PCO-judges of the LHC spent their time in their chambers as no lawyer appeared in their court. However, in subordinate courts, only bail matters were taken up before 12pm and the bar room remained filled to its capacity as majority of lawyers did not bother to attend the court proceedings.



Crackdown launched on Johar Town squatters

LAHORE

THE LDA Thursday started a massive crackdown on the squatters involved in illegally possessing plots in Johar Town scheme. The officials said the operation was launched early in the morning and continued till evening. They said the LDA teams demolished nine houses and boundary walls in various blocks of Johar Town. They said the demolished houses and boundary walls were constructed on plots: 533-E, 534-E, 91-J1, 909, 910, 911, 912, 913 and 914. Mumtaz Ali Khan, LDA senior estate officer, said the operation would continue till demolition of all the illegal constructions in the scheme. He said the LDA had identified 65 such buildings including boundary walls. Meanwhile, the LDA DG has directed immediate audit of over 200 private housing societies to check any irregularities. Chairing a meeting, he said the development work in many schemes was delayed while many schemes had made plots on the sites which were designated as parks, graveyards, mosques and commercial area in the maps.



‘Propaganda against BB baseless’

PPP Deputy Secretary Information and Senator Sajjad Bokhari has said that negative propaganda of the rulers against Benazir Bhutto in no way would decrease her popularity among the masses. In a statement issued on Thursday, Bokhari termed the propaganda baseless and utterly false. The PPP will take legal action against all the organisations and individuals responsible for character assassination of Ms Bhutto, he observed. He stated that General Pervez Musharraf had lost credibility in the comity of nations as well as among the public. The henchmen of the general would not be able to save his rule by committing atrocities against the PPP workers. He demanded immediate release of Ms Bhutto and all the political workers.



Fibre optic system upgradation on 18th

PAKISTAN Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) Transmission Network Central Region Lahore is upgrading fibre optic system at Darya Khan-Dullaywala Section on 18th November from 01:00 to 5:00 hours. Spokesman of the PTCL said company has made all necessary arrangements to carry out gradation work without any interruption. However, PTCL regrets any inconvenience caused to its customers in this regard.



Transfers and promotions at LHC

THE Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court transferred eight Additional District and Session Judges. According to the notification, Ahmad Nawaz Ranjha was transferred from Lahore to Pakpattan, Muhammad Ilyas from Pakpattan to Alipur, Malik Munir Ahmad Joiya from Chiniot to Faisalabad, Nazir Ahmad Gujana from Sheikhupura to Gujranwala, Muhammad Arshad Malik from Vehari to Sheikhupura, Rashid Ahmad from Attock to Nankana Sahib, Sabir Sultan from Nankana Sahib to Chiniot and Asghar Ali Faheem Bhatti from Nankana Sahib to Vehari. The CJ promoted nine High Court officials to Assistant Registrar slot (BS-17) against existing vacancies. These officers include, Muhammad Ilyas, Muhammad Afzaal, Makhdoom Ashraf, Syed Javed Hussain Shah, Sajjad Ahmad, Irfan Ahmad Niazi, Ijaz Ahmad, Khadim Hussain and Bashir Ahmad.



‘A shameful act’

PML-N central leader Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has strongly condemned the arrest of PTI Chief Imran Khan’s sisters and workers. According to a press statement issued on Thursday, the PML-N leader said that the arrest and maltreatment of Imran Khan’s relatives and other party activists was a shameful act which had exposed the government. He said that by using such tactics, the movement for the restoration of real democracy in the country couldn’t be suppressed.





Health competition held

SHALIMAR Hospital, Lahore, organized an annual health competition among children in a colourful ceremony on the hospital premises on Thursday. Eminent columnist Munnoo Bhai was the chief guest while Dr Rashid Zia, Dr Lubna Riaz Dar and Dr Sofia Bokhari acted as judges of the competition among two categories of children between the ages of one month and six-month and six-month and one year. In the category of children between the ages of one month and six-month, Abdul Rafah, Muhammad Talha and Muhammad Hasan won top three positions in the competition respectively. In the category of children between the ages of six-month and one year, Muhammad Rehan, Sanober and Muhammad Abdullah won top three positions respectively.



11 bikes, 5 cars recovered from gang

ACCORDING to Punjab Police Spokesman, Sialkot police have smashed a four-member motorcycle snatcher gang and recovered 11 stolen motorcycles as well as five cars from them. While briefing in this regard, District Police Officer Cap (r) Muhammad Amin said that a special team, comprising highly experienced police officers/officials, was constituted to control the incidents of motorcycle snatching in the area. The police team, by dint of its professional experience, succeeded in tracing out a dangerous criminals’ gang involved in motorcycle and vehicle snatching incidents. The team conducted surprise raid last night and arrested the accused including Ramzan alias Janni, Pervaiz alias Paija, Akbar and Nazir on the spot. The raiding team recovered 11 motorcycles, 5 cars and automatic weapons from the gangsters.



Mujahid squad busts 35 gangs in 10 months

MUJAHID Squad police registered 4,353 cases against 4,369 arrested criminals under various sections of PPC and recovered booty items and illicit weapons from them since January to October, 207. At least 1,682 cases were registered on keeping illicit weapons, 1,867 on dealing in drugs, while 803 cases were registered on various heinous offences. Mujahid Squad also recovered eight motorcycles, four cars and firearms from criminals. A huge quantity of drugs was also seized. Mujahid Squad has also arrested 35 gangs during three police encounters during the first ten months of this year. Around 4,040,448 calls were received on Emergency 15 in 10 months out of which 4,007,653 were found bogus. Police took action on 26,321 calls.



3 arrested for planning to attack rivals

SHADBAGH police have arrested three people who intended to carry out an attack on their rival group. Three people of Tai group were planning to assault Phularwania group for vengeance. Police have seized rifles, pump action, moser and 400 cartridges from them. SSP Aftab Ahmad Cheema has announced cash prizes and commendatory certificated for the raiding teams.



CCPO suspends three cops

CAPITAL City Police Officer Additional I G Malik Muhammad Iqbal suspended three cops including Incharge Mobile Squad Sadar Division, Incharge Mujahid Sattokatla and Naib Muharrir Police Station Sattokatla on account of gross misconduct and sheer negligence. These officials were found guilty during a course of inquiry carried out by the SSP D&I. The CCPO has further directed SSP Administration to take departmental action against the accused officials. Those suspended include ASI Mohammad Riaz and Head-Constables Tariq Aziz and Nafees Ahmad. The action was initiated on an application submitted by Ibrar Ahmad who alleged that the accused officials had harassed him on the pretext of search.



Car, bike lifter gang arrested

ANTI Vehicles Lifting Staff have arrested two car and motorcycle lifters and seized six cars and a motorcycle worth Rs 1.4 million from them. The accused have confessed to a number of such incidents during preliminary interrogation. A special team collected the particulars of notorious car lifter gang and arrested its two members from Yateem Khana area on a tip-off. The culprits were identified as Javed Iqbal and Maqsood. Capital City Police Officer Additional IG Malik Muhammad Iqbal has announced cash prizes and commendatory certificates for the police reading team.

Mrs Mumtaz dies

It will help employees of PTCL become skilful to earn their livelihood and play an active role for the socio-economic development of the country. Khalid Mahmood, Chairman TEVTA, said this while addressing the occasion of MoU signing ceremony. Explaining the details of the agreement between TEVTA and PTCL, he said TEVTA will provide technical education and vocational training to the employees of PTCL who will opt for VSS.



Two killed in accidents

LAHORE

A 35-year-old man was run over and killed by a rashly driven truck on Canal Road near Doctors Hospital while an elderly man was crushed to death by a train in Imamia Colony on Thursday. Akbar Khalid, resident of Baghbanpura, was going on a motorcycle (LXF 329) and a truck hit him near Doctors Hospital near PCSIR Colony and he died instantly. However, locals called Edhi service and he was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. In another incident, Shafqat, 50, son of Abdul Hameed, resident of Anexy Colony, was crossing a railway line when a train struck him and he died on the spot.



Mashhood vows struggle for democracy

PAKISTAN Muslim League-N Punjab Vice President and Former MPA Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan Advocate vowed to carry on the struggle for restoration of democracy, judiciary, ending of dictatorship and martial law from the country. Addressing the session of representatives of various political parties at his office, he stressed the need for unity of all political parties on one point agenda to combat the growing menace of dictatorship. He also condemned baton charging and arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan, and expressed his outrage over brutal treatment meted to lawyers.





LPP vows to continue Imran’s mission

Labour party Pakistan would continue the mission of Imran to mobilise students against dictatorship after his arrest, stated the partyís leaders in a joint statement issued on Thursday. LPP general secretary Farooq Tariq, Moeen Pannu and Muhammad Afzal lauded the struggle of Imran khan and added his kidnap, torture and subsequent handing over to police by fascist IJT activists in Punjab University had exposed the military-mullah alliance. They also stated such religious fascism in educational institutions should be condemned by everyone and must not be tolerated. They vowed to free the Punjab University from the clutches of such elements. They alleged JI had a tradition of torturing political opponents and the JI leadership was staging a mock drama after the shameful act of IJT activists.



Imran urges students to save country

THE future of Pakistan is dependent on the role of youth at this crucial juncture as they are nation’s main line of defence against tyranny and oppression, stated Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan in a special message from Kot Lakhpat Jail to the students of Punjab University, LUMS, FAST, Beaconhouse and other colleges. The message was released by a PTI spokesperson after meeting with Imran on Thursday. “This country of your’s is on the brink of destruction,” Imran said to the students while urging them to continue their struggle. “I pin my hopes on your activism after seeing the way the students welcomed me at the Punjab University and I salute you for your historic and heroic activism,” Imran expressed his feelings about the students. Imran was arrested from the Punjab University on Wednesday after Jamat-e-Islami student wing members hoodwinked his attempt to mobilise students against the government.



— not produced before any court

CHAIRMAN Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, Imran Khan, who was arrested on Wednesday under terrorism charges and section 61 CrPC has not been produced before any court on Thursday so far. The law says that anyone arrested under section 61 CrPC without warrants (as happened in Imran’s case) should be produced before a magistrate. Article-10 of the suspended Constitution also says that every arrested and detained person should be brought before a magistrate within 24 hours of his arrest.
