ISAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday displayed on its website the results of the Thursday’s by-elections in 38 NA and provincial assemblies’ constituencies, showing that the PML-N had clinched the top position with five NA seats, followed by the PPPP with three, PTI with two and the MQM, ANP and PkMAP one seat each.
Of the 26 seats of provincial assemblies, the PML-N topped the rest with 13 seats: 11 in Punjab and two in Balochistan. The PPPP and MQM shared three seats each. The PPPP regained ground in Punjab by securing two seats and also secured one seat in Sindh while its old ally MQM got three seats in Sindh. While the PML-N maintained its upper hand in Punjab, the PPPP looked recovering not only in Sindh but also in the largest province, where its candidate Ghulam Noor Rabbani Khar won from NA-177, Shazia Marri from NA-235 and Shams-un-Nisa from NA-237.
Imran Khan’s PTI received two stunning defeats: first in NA-01, where its inexperienced candidate Gul Badshah lost to the ANP veteran Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour while the second was in NA-71: the hometown constituency of Imran Khan, where the PML-N’s candidate returned. But its win from NA-48 through Assad Umar, who is from Karachi, is a significant development that is believed to be mainly due to divisions in the PML-N voters.
The PTI managed to win two provincial assembly seats in Punjab while the JUI-F got one seat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: three PA seats went to the independents; two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one in Balochistan.
The overall turnout in the electoral exercise remained 39.6 percent — 37 percent in the NA constituencies and 40 percent in provincial assemblies’ constituencies.Re-polling has been ordered in 18 polling stations of NA-05 and NA-27, where women voters were barred from casting their votes while polling was postponed in NA-25 because of security reasons. This constituency shares border with the tribal areas.
