Degrees of 181 MPs remain unverified

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Wednesday provided the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) a list of 181 parliamentarians of 2008-2013 whose degrees remained unverified even after the completion of their terms and despite the direction of the Supreme Court and the ECP’s push.
Now the ECP would decide whether to allow these MPs to contest the next elections or bar them, or give them a chance to get their degrees verified.The list of 181 includes many high-profile political figures such as Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan (he has approached the HEC but has been asked to get his O-level certificate from Cambridge for the Commission’s verification); Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah; Qamar Zaman Kaira; Makhdoom Muhammad Javed Hashmi; Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat; Mian Manzoor Ahmad Khan Wattoo; Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch; Imtiaz Safdar Warraich; Hamid Nasir Chattha; Bushra Gohar, Attiya Inayatullah; Mahreen Anwar Raja and others.
The HEC letter written by Azizullah Khan, assistant director, and addressed to Director (Legal) ECP Sana Ullah Malik says that out of 249 parliamentarians, the HEC has verified the degrees of only 68 as genuine as of March 16, 2013, when the National Assembly completed its term.
