ISLAMABAD: The fate of as many as 24 PhD scholars who are allegedly involved in plagiarism would be decided in a high-level meeting to be held on Nov 10 by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), sources said.
According to the well-placed sources, the cases of alleged plagiarism were hanging in balance in the HEC for the past one and a half years due to one reason or the other but due to strict stance of its Chairman Javaid Laghari, the commission took immediate action on such cases and letters were written to the respective universities asking them to take immediate action against those scholars who are reportedly involved in the act plagiarism.
The scholars whose cases would be discussed in plagiarism committee included the name of Mohammad Suleman Memon from Quaid-i-Azam University, Dr Zafar Iqbal and Dr Tahir Shafi from University of Punjab, Dr Aslam Khan from University of Agriculture, Dr Behram Khan, Dr Khan Babar, Dr Aziz Khan, Dr Nazar and Dr Inam Khan from Bolan University, M Noman from University of Peshawar, Dr Khalid Rasheed, Zaheer Aziz, M Suleman, Amir Aman from International Islamic University, Dr Inam-ul-Haq and Professor Shabih ul Hassan from UET Lahore, M Rahimuddin from Gomal University, M Naeem Ayaz from University of Lahore, Gul Afshan Soomro from Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai university, G A Sohata and K H Lashari from University of Sindh, Professor Saleem Mahmood, Ameer Khatoon Sheikh, Dr Jalaluddin Noori and Dr Shaheen Khan from Karachi University.
According to details, it was the fourth meeting on plagiarism to be held on the premises of the HEC. The sources said that the most cases have been registered against the scholars due to the complaints registered by their colleagues or fellows.
It is learnt that the HEC has written several letters to the concerned universities asking them to hold inquiry against the alleged plagiarism and take appropriate action against those who are found involved in this act.

Chairman Javed Laghari conceded that a plagiarism committee has been called by the HEC; however he refused to mention the names of those who are allegedly involved in plagiarism. “I am very keen that the issue of plagiarism has to be resolved on immediate basis. There will be no compromise in quality and research in universities and the HEC would crack down on plagiarism,” he said.
