September 05, 2010
BAHAWALPUR: Khadija Waran, wife of Amir Yar Waran and the PPP candidate, has won bye-elections in Bahawalpur’s constituency NA-184, according to unofficial results, reports Geo News.
The unofficial results show that Khadija bagged 75,507 votes, and her lead was 27,362 votes. Her closest rival was Pakistan Muslim League-N’s Najeebuddin Awaisi, who got 48,145 votes. NA-184 fell vacant after the PPP candidate, Amir Yar Waran’s degree was declared fake.
Twelve candidates were vying for the bye-elections. The real competition was between Khadija Waran and Mian Najeebuddin Awaisi. Out of 226 polling stations, 63 were declared sensitive and 31 highly sensitive, where deployment of Rangers was undertaken. In polling station No 67, workers of the PPP and the PML-N came to blows and police had to baton-charge them to bring the situation under control. Polling was suspended temporarily.
Ameen Abbasi adds from Bahawalpur: On the polling day, dozens of Punjab ministers from the PPP and the PML-N remained present in the constituency and continued working for their candidates amid exchange of charges of rigging against each other.
