Govt asked to restore gas supply to knitwear units

LAHORE: Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA) Zonal Chairman Muhammad Amjad Khawaja has appealed to the government to resume the supply of natural gas to the processing units of the clothing sector in Lahore.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Khawaja pointed out that while gas supplies to the entire textile sector have been restored, supplies to composite knitwear units have been denied.
He said knitwear and garment producers are the main beneficiaries of the GSP Plus status and its Lahore units have been denied gas supply which amounts to only 1.75mmcfd. Further, he said, the government had decided to ensure the supply of gas to textile processing units during an ECC meeting but never implemented its decision.
“Our members have been denied gas on the pretext that they are not members of APTMA. This is a misunderstanding on the part of SNGPL since knitwear apparel is the most important, highly valued-added sector and integral part of textile industry,” he added.
