MKRMS seminar today

THE Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman Memorial Society is organising a round-table conference on “Devolution of Population - A Way Forward” at Pearl Continental Hotel on Tuesday (today). Punjab Minister for Population Welfare Neelam Jabbar will preside over the seminar while Punjab Population Secretary Dr Munir Ahmed, University of Gujrat VC Dr Nizam-ud-Din, Center for Public Policy and Governance FC College Director Dr Saeed Shafqat and other learned speakers will be a part of the conference.

Cold, dry weather

A WESTERLY wave is approaching western parts of the country and light rain is expected at isolated places in the country on Tuesday. For Lahore, MET officials predicted cold and dry weather with mist and smoky haze in the morning. Maximum temperature in the City was recorded at 19.3 C and minimum at 2 C. MET officials said Monday’s westerly wave was likely to affect Balochistan. They said mainly cold and dry weather was expected over most parts while light rain was expected at isolated places in Balochistan, northeastern Punjab and upper KP.

THE Government College University (GCU) Physics Department organised a condolence reference for Prof Dr Tahir Hussain, a noted nuclear physicist and educationist who passed away last week at the age of 87. According to a press statement, a large number of students and colleagues of the late Prof Tahir Hussain attended the ceremony.

Obituary

SHEIKH Ahmed Ullah Zafar, father of Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association (PPLA) President Dr Zahid Ahmed Sheikh, passed away on Monday after a prolonged ailment. According

to a press statement, a large number of people from different walks of life, including students and teachers, attended the funeral prayers and prayed for the departed soul. Joint Action Committee (JAC) will hold Quran Khawani on Tuesday (today).

Servant recovered

The District and Sessions Court on Monday released a 19-year-old servant from illegal detention of an influential woman of Wapda Town. According to case details, mother of Babar Hussain, Naziran Bibi, filed a habeas corpus in the court alleging that his son was subjected to sever torture by his employer Tahira Khan. She contended that some days ago, she had visited her son at Tahira’s house where other servants told her that her son was facing bad treatment there. On December 19, she took his son back to her home at Khokhar Road after which Tahira along with four guards barged into Naziran’s house and took Babar Hussain forcibly with them. Naziran once again visited Tahira’s house and found his son handcuffed there. She prayed to the court for the recovery of his son.

Dairy products stop diabetes

New research suggests that whole-fat dairy products — generally shunned by health experts — contain a fatty acid that may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. The fatty acid is called trans-palmitoleic acid, according to the study in the Dec. 21 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, and people with the highest blood levels of this fatty acid reduce their odds of diabetes by 62 percent compared to those with the lowest blood levels of it.

Three robbers arrested

THREE accused in more than 35 cases of robbery, dacoity and mobile snatching have been arrested in the Shahdara police area on Monday. The arrested accused, Muhammad Wasim alias Semi, Azmat alias Jaju and Shahbaz alias Matti, have also confessed to their crimes committed in three districts. According to Lahore Operations Police spokesman, Shahdara police have seized two stolen motorbikes, 10 mobile phones, cash and other valuables from the arrested accused. He said police were tracing their fourth accomplice Asif who managed to flee when police raided. DIG Operations Rao Sardar Ali Khan announced cash and commendatory certificates for the Shahdara SHO and his team.




Road safety drive

THE City Traffic Police on Monday started the second phase of the traffic awareness and road safety campaign on Model Ferozpur Road. More than 17 female wardens, 29 male wardens, two female and two male inspectors have been deputed in order to achieve positive results of this campaign. According to a handout issued on Monday, pamphlets, booklets, and stickers would be distributed among the motorists and bike riders.

Youth killed

A 25-year-old youth was killed after his bike collided with a donkey-cart in the jurisdiction of Harbanspura on Monday. The deceased was identified as Shahbaz, a resident of Salamatpura. Police said the victim was on his way to work on his motorbike when his bike collided with a donkey-cart. He fell down and sustained severe injuries. Locals of the area rushed him to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Later, police handed over the body to his family. In another incident, a woman was run over and killed by a rashly driven car in the Kahna police area. The deceased was identified Akhtar Bibi, 70, a resident of Attari Darbar, Ferozepur Road.
