‘Media has the power to bring about social progress’

Karachi: The media has the strength and capability to merge orthodox doctrine and conservative mindset to help bring national development and social progress if it functions impartially and according to international set parameters of journalistic ethics. This was the outcome of a discussion on “media as a tool to promote Pakistan worldwide and its social responsibility within”. The panel discussion was held in connection with the second National Human Resource Convention by Newport Institute of Communications and Economics, The discussion was participated by renowned writer, poet and journalist Mahmood Sham, Managing Director Social Policy Development Centre, Dr Khalida Ghous, famous Journalist Mujahid Barelvi, Television Producers, Kazim Pasha and Haider Imam Rizvi and TV/Stage artist, Talat Hussain. The participants of the panel discussion also underlined the role of media in uplifting the image of the country worldwide. “Endeavours should have to be taken to bring to light all such image building events to negate and dispel the disillusioned negative impression of the country,” participants pledged. Rector, Newports Institute, Huma Bukhari in her opening remarks highlighted the role of media specially during natural calamities identifying the areas need to be addressed and to motivate people to help their fellow countrymen in distress. “Socially linked issues are needed to be tackled through joint efforts and the watchdog role of media in this regard can not be ruled out”, she observed. Dr Khalida Ghous opined that strengthened social structures were the basis of an established society. “Although our society is confronting with social weaknesses but it is the need of the hour to stand united against all odds to bring a prosperous and peaceful environment for the generations to come”, she maintained. Mehmood Shaam in his speech stressed for equal opportunities for the citizens in every walk of life to bring out their capabilities for

social and national development. “The progress of any society or nation depends largely upon just distribution of gains, education and health facilities, dispensation of justice and human rights assurances,” he added.
