Split may weaken PML-N candidate in PP-34 by-poll

From Faisal Aziz

SARGODHA: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has divided into many groups for the by-poll in PP-34 and dissident group has fielded its candidate, weakening the position of the party candidate.

The PML-N awarded the party ticket to Tabraiz Gill while other 26 candidates were refused. The rebel group workers have alleged that Senior Advisor to Chief Minister Zulfiqar Khosa gave the ticket to Tabraiz on the basis of favouritism as he had no strong position in the constituency. They also alleged that Khosa had received money for giving the party ticket and they would not support Tabraiz Gill. “Tabraiz is the cousin of former MPA Rizwan Gill who was disqualified by the Supreme Court and the ticket was awarded to the same family.”

Meanwhile, all the angry groups of the PML-N are not campaigning for Tabraiz. They are candidly supporting the rebel group candidate, Ijaz Kahlon. PML-N city president Hamid Hameed was also refused the part ticket. He is very influential in the area and so far he is supporting Ijaz Kahloon. On the other hand, the Katchela group of New Satellite Town was also angry with the PML-N leaders and they are not supporting the party candidate openly.

Meanwhile, Anjuman-e-Tajran University Road president Malik Abid was also in race for the PML-N ticket, but he was refused the ticket. After the refusal, traders are still indecisive about supporting Tabraiz. Zil-e-Subhan, son of MPA Tayyaba Zameer, is also contesting but he has no influence in the area and he will not bag more than 1,000 votes.

Interestingly, the Jamaat-e-Islami which bagged approximately 10,000 votes in the constituency has not so far supported any candidate and announced to withdraw from the election. However, some JI office-bearers are canvassing for Ijaz Kahlon who seems to be a strong candidate as compared to PML-N candidate Tabraiz Gill. The JI has a good vote bank in the Satellite Town and New Satellite Town and it clinched the UC nazims seats from there. Though JI leaders are continuously saying that they have boycotted the election due to rigging in the by-polls in Lahore, but they are secretly supporting Ijaz Kahlon who is enjoying a good position in rural areas of the constituency.

Addressing a meeting at 87/NB, PML-N district leader Mumtaz Kahloon claimed that all the angry party factions were supporting them and they would not withdraw from the election. He alleged that Zulfiqar Khosa was destroying and dividing the party and party leaders were not informed about the award of the ticket.

He said that a large number of the General Council members had opposed the nomination of Tabraiz Gill. “Khosa awarded him ticket after receiving bribe from him,” he alleged. He said that they were bound to the party discipline, but the leadership should also respect the feelings of the workers. He said that he would give the seat to the party after his success. “Voters are supporting us as we are honest while our rival Tabriz does not enjoy good reputation. Our rivals resorted to aerial firing after getting the party ticket and their character is before the people,” he maintained.
