President confers civil, military awards

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday conferred military and civil awards on individuals in recognition of gallantry, academic distinction or distinction in the fields of sports and nursing.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was the recipient of the Nishan-i-Pakistan. The Hilal-i-Pakistan was conferred on General Liang Guanglie (China) and Prof Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu (Turkey) for their services to Pakistan. The Hilal-i-Shujaat was conferred on Dr Maulana Muhammad Sarfaraz Naimi (posthumous).

The recipients of Hilal-i-Imtiaz included: Dr M Qasim Jan (NWFP) for services in Science (Academic Teaching/Scientific Research); Dr Azhar Masood Ahmed Faruqui (Sindh) for services in medicine; Bano Qudsia (Punjab) for services in literature; Asma Jahangir (Punjab) for services in human rights; Sardar Muhammad Yasin Malik (Sindh) for public service; and Lt-Gen Muhammad Masood Aslam.

The Hilal-i-Quaid-i-Azam was conferred on Prof Qin Dahe (China) for his services to Pakistan. An Qiguang (China) and Domenico Benincas were the recipients of the Sitara-i-Pakistan.
