ROTTERDAM, Netherlands: Lee Kyu-Won won the men’s under90 kg title at the judo world championships on Saturday, ousting Russian Kirill Denisov by ippon.
In the bronze medal play-offs Egypt’s Hesham Mesbah defeated Slovakia’s Milan Randl and Uzbek Dilshod Choriev beat Spain’s David Alarza, both by ippon.
In the women’s -78kg, home favourite Marhinde Verkerk went on to defeat Maryna Pryshchepa of Ukraine in the final with a winning waza-ari score.
Germany’s Heide Wollert denied Lebrun a bronze in their bronze medal bout and Sun Yi of China also landed a medal with a decisive yuko score over Spaniard Esther San Miguel, who lost a golden score chance to get past Verkerk in the semis before losing out to Sun.
Yuri Alvear of Colombia saw off the challenge of Hungarian Anett Meszaros with an ippon score to land the women’s -70kg and a first ever world medal for the South American country.
Houda Miled of Tunisia and Japan’s Mina Watanabe took the bronze in beating Italian Erica Barbieri and Briton Sally Conway.
Meanwhile, Japan’s double world champion Yasuyuki Muneta missed out on a medal on Sunday at the judo world championships after suffering a third round loss to Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Dorjpalam in their +100kg meeting.
