ISLAMABAD: The National Engineering Services of Pakistan Limited (NESPAK) has supported the power generation projects of PEPCO and the KESC by providing technical, design and expertise-based consultancy input to the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP), route survey of GEPCO transmission lines, 800-megawatt combined cycle power project at Guddu and 425MW combined cycle power plant at Nandipur.
According to a press statement issued on Monday, NESPAK provided consultancy services to the Karachi Nuclear Power Complex (KNPC) for the replacement of aging 132KV circuit breakers and protection relays of 132KV double-circuit transmission line that links KANUPP with the KESC network at Baldia grid station.
The old bulk oil circuit breakers and electromechanical relays have been replaced with the latest SF6 circuit breakers and numerical line protection devices. Standalone 132KV current transformers have also been provided protection and metering functions as a substitute for the bushing current transformers in the bulk oil circuit breakers. The KNPC and NESPAK engineers have worked closely in devising a discriminative protection scheme and its integration into the complex system of the nuclear power plant. Both circuits of the KANUPP-Baldia double-circuit lines have been re-energised with the new equipment.
The NESPAK provided consultancy services for contract administration, detailed design review and construction supervision of the 425MW combined cycle power plant at Nandipur, costing $329 million.
The basic design of the project, prepared by the Dongfang Electric Corporation (DECL) of China, was reviewed by the NESPAK and a design review meeting was held between the NESPAK, PEPCO and DECL officials in early 2009 to resolve technical issues. The construction of test piles has already commenced at site under the supervision of NESPAK.
A team of the Planning Commission, headed by Lt General (Retd) Muhammad Zubair, visited the project site earlier in 2009. Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, along with others also visited the site. The delegates were briefed by the PEPCO and NESPAK officials on the progress of the project.
The third round of pre-award clarification meetings among the PEPCO, NESPAK and Harbin Power Engineering Company Limited, China, was held in February and March 2009 in Lahore. Technical and contractual matters related to the Combined Cycle Power Plant Project 800MW at Guddu were discussed and most of the pending issues were also resolved.
Moreover, the NESPAK-led joint venture is providing consultancy services to the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) Secretariat located in Tehran for “Feasibility Study on Interconnection of ECO Countries Power System”. After receiving the data from Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, a technical study report on interconnection of power systems of the three countries was submitted to the ECO on March 2.
NESPAK has completed the detailed survey, preparation of plan, profile drawings and tower sporting of 132KV transmission lines of about 110km length of Gujranwala Electric Power Company’s (GEPCO) electricity network. The work has been approved by GEPCO and the National Transmission and Despatch Company for implementation.
