Popular comedian quits showbiz

PESHAWAR: Freed from captivity, noted Pashto drama artiste Alamzeb Mujahid Friday bid farewell to his profession and announced to go for Tableegh (preaching of Islam).

Alamzeb Mujahid, popularly known as Janaan, after getting freedom from unknown kidnappers Thursday night made his first appearance before media at an emergency press conference at Peshawar Press Club Friday noon. He was brief and precise in the announcement of retirement from acting and avoided answering any query. He requested media to report only what he said and avoided giving details of his kidnapping saga.

“I announce retirement from showbiz and leading the remaining part of my life in the way that pleases Allah Almighty. I would earn halal (rightful) food for my children. I have trust in Allah, Who would give me better livelihood in the normal life than showbiz,” Alamzeb said.

Flanked by Dr Niaz Ali, another noted Pashto artiste, Alamzeb said only one of his dramas ‘Kaki Four’ that has already been recorded would be released, as he had made commitment with the producer of that drama. He said he would embark on a 40-day preaching tour.

He was picked from Hayatabad on Monday last and was freed on the fourth day of his captivity, reportedly on the condition of spending 40 days in preaching and saying goodbye to his career as actor.

Though he was tight-lipped about his kidnapping, according to reports he was picked by a religious outfit that released him on the condition of quitting the showbiz and spending time in preaching of Islam.

Noted Pashto singer Gulzar Alam has already abandoned singing and grew a beard after being teased by elements opposed to music and musicians.

Another singer, Haroon Bacha has been given asylum in the US, while singer Sardar Yusufzai escaped an attempt on his life at Asbanr, Chakdarra in Dir Lower sometime ago. Anwar Gul, a harmonium player in his orchestra, died in the attack while their other colleagues sustained injuries.
