Importance of ecosystem restoration highlighted at int’l webinar

LAHORE : An international webinar on the theme of “Ecosystem Restoration” was organised in connection with World Environment Day by the Division of Science and Technology of University of Education (UOE) on Saturday.

Many eminent experts including Prof Dr Fahrul Zaman Huyop from University Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru, Malaysia, Dr Aman Ullah from University of Alberta, Canada, Prof Dr Mushtaq Ahmad from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad and Prof Dr Syed Aftab Wajid from University of Agriculture, Faisalabad spoke on the occasion.

Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairman Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, UOE Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha and others also attended the webinar.

Addressing the webinar, Prof Dr Fazal A Khalid said this year Pakistan had been honoured to host the World Environment Day, which was a testament to the fact that Pakistanis see the restoration of the ecosystem and the elimination of pollution as an important issue.

But given the gravity of the issue, he added, we needed to move forward with a concrete strategy.

Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha said that on the eve of World Environment Day, we all have to renew our commitment to protect it, so that we can provide our future generations with the best natural resources including environment and food.

We should not rely on governments alone to eliminate environmental pollution and restore this ecosystem because it is the common responsibility of all of us.

Expressing their views at the webinar, the experts presented various proposals for protection of the environment and elimination of pollution. Division of Science and Technology Prof Dr Alam Saeed also spoke.

On this occasion, the university also took an important eco-friendly initiative, according to which a Botanical Garden was inaugurated on the main campus. More than 76 varieties of plants have been planted in this garden. Moreover, two Botanical Gardens were also inaugurated in Faisalabad and Vehari Campus of University of Education.
