CoverGirl has been adding to its model roster quite a bit over the past few weeks, with Issa Rae and Ayesha Curry both being named new faces for the brand. And on Wednesday, the cosmetics company announced the latest beneficiary of its hiring spree: It has tapped 69-year-old model (and dietician/nutritionist with two master’s degrees, notes The New York Times), Maye Musk, as its newest ambassador.

“I’m so excited to say that I’m now officially a COVERGIRL, at 69! Beauty is for all ages,” she tweeted on Wednesday morning.

Musk, who happens to be the mother of Tesla CEO and inventor Elon Musk, is an industry veteran who began modeling at the age of 15. But her career has experienced something of a boom over the last several years: She appeared in Beyoncé’s ‘Haunted’ music video in 2013, and got signed by IMG in 2016. She’s also appeared in campaigns for Target and Clinique, on the covers of New York magazine and Elle Canada and in the pages of Vogue Italia, Vogue Korea and Vanity Fair. Musk also walked in Concept Korea’s Spring 2018 show at New York Fashion Week earlier this month.

CoverGirl has been building a diverse roster of brand ambassadors over that time, bringing on its first male face, James Charles in October of last year, followed by its first hijab-wearing CoverGirl, Nura Afia, last November. So bringing a bit of age diversity to the lineup is a logical next move for the company.

“I just love that CoverGirl wants to do diversity,” Musk said in an interview with The New York Times. “They haven’t had a model this old in their campaigns. I’m turning 70 in April of next year. I think that women will be really inspired to see that even at 69 you can get a beauty campaign.”

“Maye Musk is not only a timeless beauty, but a visionary who has always followed her own path, creating new opportunities and paving the way for so many others who might not meet the industry standard of ‘model,’ but are truly beautiful in every regard,” said Ukonwa Ojo, Senior Vice President of CoverGirl in a statement from the company.

“This is exactly what CoverGirl is all about: owning your identity and proudly sharing with the world all the facets that make you, you. Maye is an affirmation of the power and importance of diversity and inclusivity in the world of beauty.”
