The fire that erupted during water boring near the Korangi Crossing in the early hours of Saturday continued to burn with high intensity on Sunday, according to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan.
When a local construction company was boring over 1,100 feet deep to install a tube well, a fire broke out suddenly, probably due to a high-pressure gas leak from underground.
Authorities believe that extinguishing the fire abruptly can cause the gas to spread in the surrounding area, increasing the risk of a larger hazard. The relevant institutions are investigating the type of gas reservoir present underground.
The fire has been contained, and the situation is under control, with no residential areas in immediate danger. Officials noted that similar incidents have occurred in this area before, as gas leaks during boring operations are common.
Such fires typically extinguish naturally within one to two weeks. The site will be monitored for the next few days before deciding the next course of action.
