KARACHI: Around 25 per cent of Americans who were born as Muslims in the United States are no longer Muslims.
This was disclosed in a report published by the Pew Research Center, an American think tank.
The report examined trends in conversions to and from Islam. It surveyed 36 countries and analysed the Muslim populations in 13 of them, including the United States, Kenya, Indonesia and Turkey.
It said three-quarters of people who were born as Muslim in the US still profess Islam as their religion. The remaining 25 per cent people are no longer Muslims. Of them, 13 per cent are now non-religious and 6 per cent have become Christians.
Meanwhile, 20 per cent of the Muslims in the United States are those who converted to Islam in childhood, the report stated.In the 13 countries that were surveyed, less than 3 per cent adults had converted to Islam or left it.
Eleven per cent of the Muslims in Kenya are those who converted to Islam from Christianity, the report said, adding that almost all the current Muslims in Bangladesh, India and Turkiye were born Muslims.
