LAHORE: Taking a major step towards environmental sustainability the RUDA is going to convert the Mahmood Booti dump site into Pakistan’s first carbon credit project. Spread over 43 acres, the landfill site has accumulated 13 million tonnes of waste since 1997, causing severe pollution and methane emissions. The move will not only reduce environmental risks but also integrate the site into Pakistan’s green economy. With an investment of Rs5 billion, Ruda will rehabilitate the site by capturing methane emissions and converting them into usable energy, cutting carbon emissions by one million tonnes over 15 years, equivalent to removing 22,000 cars annually.
