KARACHI: BYD, the world’s largest maker of new-energy vehicles, has introduced a next-generation electric-vehicle platform designed to match the refuelling speeds of petrol-powered cars, a breakthrough that could accelerate EV adoption globally, said a statement on Tuesday.
Dubbed the Super e-Platform, the system delivers megawatt-level charging, setting a new benchmark for mass-market EVs. The platform achieves a peak 1,000kW charging speed, enabling a five-minute charge for 400 kilometres of range -- the fastest recharge rate in any mass-produced vehicle.
Chairperson and President of BYD Wang Chuanfu unveiled the technology at an event in Shenzhen, calling it a pivotal step in eliminating charging anxiety, one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption. “Our goal is to make EV charging as fast as refuelling a petrol car -- achieving oil-electric parity in charging speed,” Wang said.
The breakthrough relies on a full liquid-cooled megawatt flash-charging terminal, a first-of-its-kind system capable of delivering 1,360kW of power output. BYD has also introduced dual-gun charging technology, which can upgrade fast chargers to ultra-fast speeds, improving compatibility across existing public charging networks.
