Central leaders of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), including Dr Safdar Ali Abbasi, Dr Fehmida Mirza, Syed Zain Shah, Liaquat Ali Khan Jatoi, Masroor Khan Jatoi, and Abdul Razzaq Rahimoon, stated in their joint statement on World Water Day on Saturday that due to the incompetence shown by Sindh’s “corrupt rulers”, the province was facing a severe water crisis, with hunger and poverty looming everywhere.
They said that due to the lack of water in the Indus River, there is nothing but sand everywhere, and millions of acres of land in Sindh have turned barren. They alleged that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has compromised on the vital Indus River issue for the sake of perpetuating its rule by approving the construction of six new canals, which will lead to the complete desertification of Sindh.
The leaders demanded the immediate withdrawal of “false” criminal cases against those peacefully protesting against the new canals on the Indus River and their immediate release.
They stated that if the PPP is truly sincere with Sindh, it should announce its separation from the federal government. They also urged the federal government to respect the will of Sindh’s people and cancel the project of constructing new canals.
