Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday announced the enforcement of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) by-laws and the introduction of fixed burial rates for cemeteries under the KMC's control.
The new burial fee, set at Rs14,300, would cover the cost of land, grave digging, bricklaying, slab installation, and all other related tasks. To ensure transparency, banners displaying the fixed rates had been installed at all the KMC-registered cemeteries. Citizens were urged not to pay more than the prescribed fee.
In his statement, Wahab emphasised that anyone demanding a higher fee should be reported immediately to the helpline at 1339, where prompt action would be taken against the violators. This initiative was part of a broader effort to streamline the burial process for citizens and ensure fairness in the system.
The mayor further confirmed that action was already underway against groups involved in the destruction of graves. He made it clear that no one would be allowed to work in the KMC-registered cemeteries without proper KMC registration, and violators would face penalties as per the relevant rules.
Wahab also instructed the KMC cemetery director to visit all cemeteries to ensure strict compliance with the new regulations. He acknowledged complaints from citizens about the presence of mafias in various cemeteries, who have been overcharging and damaging graves. In response, the authorities had initiated legal proceedings against those responsible.
"Providing municipal services to citizens is our primary duty," said Mayor Wahab, adding that he understands the emotional and financial challenges families face when dealing with burial expenses. While the KMC continued its efforts to improve the city's infrastructure, addressing such fundamental issues remained a priority to ensure convenience for citizens. The KMC by-laws for cemeteries aimed to ensure proper management and regulation of all burial-related activities.
