Four armed robbers were cornered by locals while attempting a robbery in Shah Latif Town on Sunday.
During their escape attempt, a suspect opened fire that accidentally hit their own accomplices. Two of the robbers fell injured, while the other two managed to flee. One of the injured robbers later succumbed to injuries.
According to police, the incident occurred in Shah Latif Sector 22-B where the four robbers attempted to mug citizens at gunpoint. As people present nearby noticed the robbers, they surrounded them and tried to get hold of them.
Fearing the capture, a robber opened fire, which hit his own accomplices. Two injured robbers fell on the spot, while the other two robbers fled on a motorcycle. Enraged citizens attacked the injured robbers before the police arrived and took them into custody. One robber succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other was critically injured and taken to hospital.
Police claimed to have seized two pistols, a 125cc motorcycle, mobile phones, and other stolen items from the robbers. The killed robber was identified as Imran, son of Abdul Qadir, and the injured as Ibrahim, son of Abdul Latif. According to SHO Mumtaz Marwat, another man, Ihsan, was also injured during the gunfire and police were investigating whether he was an accomplice or an innocent victim.
He said police were also checking the criminal records of the robbers. Meanwhile, local residents complained that robberies and snatching incidents were rampant in the area, and police had failed to curb street crime.
