Customs officials thwarted an attempt to smuggle marijuana valued at Rs17 million at Karachi Airport on Tuesday.
Syed Irfan Ali, a spokesman for the customs, said Collector Customs Adeem Khan received a tip-off about a possible smuggling operation involving banned drugs through parcels. Acting on this information, Khan instructed Additional Collector Customs Muhammad Faisal Khan to take preventive measures.
Special teams were formed under the supervision of Assistant Collector Customs, Sharjeel Wassan, to monitor all cargo-handling points in Karachi. Customs staff at the International Mail Office opened a parcel that had arrived from Bangkok after it raised suspicions during scanning. Upon further inspection, traces of drugs were detected using a narcotics checking kit, confirming the presence of marijuana (cannabis).
The total weight of the recovered marijuana was 3.480 kilograms.
