Necessary outages

As a resident of Karachi who has witnessed a significant decrease in loadshedding over the years, I feel it is important to address some points that often get overlooked. One of the major reasons behind loadshedding is electricity theft. It is not just happening through illegal kundas connected to KE’s infrastructure – electricity is also being stolen right from our metres. As responsible citizens, we need to ensure we are not unknowingly paying for power we have not used because of meter tampering or theft in our own neighbourhoods. KE has been making efforts through their anti-theft campaigns to crack down on this, but it is something we all need to be vigilant about on an individual level.

While the scheduled maintenance shutdowns by K-Electric (KE) can be inconvenient, they are necessary to keep the power grid functioning properly. Any maintenance activity carried out by a service provider is necessary for the upkeep of systems. Even banks carry out maintenance activity and halt their services for specific durations. In case of electricity, without this upkeep, we would likely face far worse unplanned outages, which would disrupt daily life even more.
