SUKKUR: The bodies lying in the mortuary of Khairpur Medical College Civil Hospital Khairpur for three months have begun to decay due to malfunctioning of the hospital’s cooling system.
Reports said that the installed cooling system in the mortuary of Khairpur Medical College Civil Hospital became dysfunctional, causing the bodies lying for the past three months to decompose.
Scout in-charge Khalid Janwari said passersby complained to them of foul smell coming from the hospital’s mortuary.
He said that the scouts, after receiving complaints, moved to the hospital and told the administration about it but the administration showed laziness. “We were not even given masks to clean the bodies,†he added.
He said that usually the administration of the hospital hands over the bodies to the heirs after completion of the procedure, but he added two bodies had been lying in the mortuary for the past three months, which were completely rotten and infected with the multiple insects.
He said that it is a desecration of the bodies, which is a crime and the hospital administration was responsible for it.
He said that after the issue was highlighted, their team had buried two bodies but one body was still lying.
Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent of the KMC Civil Hospital Khairpur Ashfaq Ahmed Soomro said that the cooling system installed in the mortuary is in ordered condition, adding that the Khairpur Police had left bodies which without following the chemical procedure had been kept in the mortuary.
He said the bodies had been decomposed because of lack of the chemical procedure, and said that the administration repeatedly told the Station House Officers to provide letter as the bodies needed to be buried, but the police did not provide the letter for the past three months.
When asked about the procedure as to how many days the bodies can be kept in a mortuary if unidentified, he did not elaborate properly, saying one body lying for past three days in the mortuary was received from the SIUT Sukkur and was being buried. He said there were total three bodies in the mortuary.
