SUKKUR: As many as 13 members of a family died in Khairpur by consuming poisonous milk, a chemical report revealed on Friday.

The report said insecticide and benzodiazepine were detected from the tests performed.

According to senior physician Dr. Abdul Hayee Phulpoto, Benzodiazepines are depressants that produce sedation and hypnosis, relieve anxiety and muscle spasms, and reduce seizures.

In a tragic incident on August 19, thirteen members of a family died in village Haibat Khan Brohi near Pir Jo Goth, Khairpur under suspicious circumstances, with initial findings pointing to poisoned milk as the likely cause. Dr. Pervez Akhtar Korai, chemical examiner at Chemical Laboratory Sukkur confirmed on Friday that toxic substances, including insecticide and benzodiazepine were present in the deceased’s body.

The victims included Gul Baig Brohi, his wife, five sons, three daughters, and other family members.

The chemical analysis has confirmed that the victims died due to poisoning, as indicated by the presence of harmful chemicals and narcotics in their bodies. Khairpur SSP Dr Samiullah Soomro, who is leading the investigation, said the police were rigorously examining all aspects of the case and treating this case with the utmost seriousness given the loss of innocent lives, including children. He said that every aspect of the case is being considered, and “we will take legal action accordingly”.

He said that the postmortem revealed the presence of toxic substances and narcotics in the victims’ bodies, confirming suspicions that the family members were poisoned. An inquiry into the incident is currently underway, he said, adding that if any individual is found responsible during the investigation, strict legal action will be taken.
