The event, which aims to advance the maritime economy, was officially opened by Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, who served as the chief guest.

IMSEC 2024 is designed to enhance the maritime sector by fostering both global and regional partnerships and encouraging investment. CM Murad Ali Shah welcomed the secretary-general to Karachi, calling it the “gateway to Pakistan”, and expressed hope for strengthened relations and cooperation with the IMO. He underscored the country’s strategic role in global maritime trade and emphasized the nation’s commitment to environmental protection and adherence to international maritime standards.

Shah outlined Pakistan’s efforts to secure a sustainable maritime environment, focusing on reducing marine pollution and protecting marine ecosystems. He also highlighted government initiatives aimed at developing a skilled maritime workforce and the potential benefits of collaboration with the IMO for the country’s maritime community.

In his address, Velasco praised Pakistan’s commitment to maritime sustainability. He acknowledged the Ministry of Maritime Affairs’ proactive approach in seeking new areas of cooperation and encouraged Pakistan to continue its active participation in global maritime initiatives.

“The IMO shares Pakistan’s dedication to sustainability,” Velasco stated. He emphasized the importance of protecting transboundary species, minimizing ship pollution, and addressing plastic pollution. He also advocated for the adoption of green maritime corridors and alternative fuels such as methanol. Addressing the challenges facing Pakistan’s maritime industry, including the shortage of qualified seafarers, Velasco noted the country’s significant potential for growth. “With 90 per cent of global trade passing through the sea, there are vast opportunities for expansion and innovation,” he said, urging Pakistan to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and develop a comprehensive action plan to boost maritime trade.

Velasco also commended Pakistan’s hospitality and stressed the need for ongoing collaboration with the IMO to modernize and digitalize ship recycling practices. He concluded by encouraging the government to further strengthen its maritime economy and create more growth opportunities.

IMSEC 2024 is expected to serve as a crucial platform for advancing Pakistan’s maritime sector, setting the stage for sustainable trade practices, environmental conservation, and international cooperation.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, Secretary Maritime Affairs Syed Zafar Ali Shah, and the chairmen of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim were among the distinguished attendees. Other notable dignitaries also participated in the event.
