KARACHI: Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Thursday inaugurated the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Business and Investment Conference, held in Islamabad.
The event, which took place at a local hotel, was attended by senior government officials, foreign diplomats, SCO member state representatives, and leaders from Pakistan’s business community.
In his opening remarks, Khan commended the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) for its role in organizing the conference. He highlighted the importance of fostering economic ties among SCO countries through people-to-people connections and emphasized the historical and cultural links that strengthen the foundation for collaboration.
Khan also welcomed Belarus as the latest member of the SCO, expressing enthusiasm for its participation in future activities. He encouraged businesses within the SCO region to explore and seize new opportunities, particularly given the global shift towards Asia as an economic hub.
The commerce minister pointed out the importance of building strong business connections both within the SCO and with neighbouring Asian countries to create a ‘win-win support system’. He stressed the need for a robust private sector, noting that business institutions play a crucial role in resource distribution, technological advancement and global trade.
Khan underscored Pakistan’s market potential, describing its population of over 240 million as young and dynamic. He expressed confidence in the country’s economic prospects, attributing improved investor sentiment to recent government efforts to address challenges.
The conference, spanning two days, will offera platform for exploring investment opportunities in Pakistan and the wider SCO region. It is anticipated to enhance bilateral trade, encourage investment, and strengthen economic ties among member states.
In his closing remarks, Khan thanked the FPCCI for its role in organizing the conference and expressed hope that it would result in valuable partnerships and increased regional cooperation.
