ISLAMABAD: The Gwadar international airport is expected to operate national and international flights from October.
Defence Minister Khwaja Asif also hinted at the possibility on August 26. Pakistan is hosting a meeting of heads of governments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on October 15 and 16. As Chinese leaders will also attend the meeting, it is highly likely that the Gwadar airport could be opened to national and international flights near the dates of the meeting.
The airport has the capacity to handle over one million passengers annually. Built under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), it will also open new vistas of trade, tourism and economic prosperity for the whole region.
