Tumultuous elections

This letter refers to the news report ‘What next for the US as Biden ends faltering re-election campaign’ (July 22, 2024). With Trump picking the republican J D Vance as his VP and democrats rallying behind current US Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate nominated by Biden to succeed him, things have gotten more unpredictable in US politics than ever before. If Trump wins the election, chances are that Vivek Ramaswamy, who declared his candidacy for the Republican Party nomination and later withdrew in favour of Trump, would get the very powerful post of US secretary of state.

VP Harris has to find some very smart, bright and skilled presidential advisors if she is to stand a chance of competing in the next presidential debate slated for September and, should she win, to survive as president in the face of fierce Republican opposition. Trump has already said that it will be easier for him to handle Kamala in the debate than Biden and she does have a reputation for speaking in an awkward and confusing manner. Tough times for US politics indeed.
