At least five children were killed after a deadly blaze started in a house Sunday night in South Bend, Indiana, according to the rescue official, leaving one of them injured.
The firefighters arrived at the scene at 222 North LaPorte Avenue and encountered heavy fire engulfing the first and second floors of the home, rescue officials were quoted by local media.
During the operation, the officials successfully rescued six children from the engulfed house. However, five of them lost their life later.
The sixth survivor was transported to a specialised pediatric burn center in Indianapolis for medical assistance.
According to officials, a firefighter also fell through a floor during the incident. He was later released from the hospital after being treated for injuries.
The firefighters battled the blaze for at least three hours. Officials are ascertaining the cause of the fire as they have commenced an investigation.
At least two firefighters were injured in a separate incident Monday in a north suburban house fire.
Officials said that a fire broke out in the basement of a home in the 1100 block of Florence Avenue in Evanston at about 9:45am, which spread to other parts of the house.
As the fire spread, the first floor collapsed, trapping two rescue officials.
They were taken out and were provided medical assistance. According to authorities, they are in stable condition.
In the unfortunate incident, a cat died and three residents were displaced.
