Despite the many controversies and tension between the two countries, when it comes to talent, there are no boundaries. Keeping this in mind (perhaps) comes this initiative Zeal for Unity, backed by Zee TV network, which is also responsible for Zee Zindagi – a channel dedicated to airing Pakistani plays across India and beyond.
The initiative is unique in the sense that it gives 12 filmmakers (six from Pakistan, six from India) a chance to tell all sorts of stories and challenge our perceived notions with their narratives. In fact, this initiative is gaining momentum as Pakistani filmmakers have landed in India and will showcase their verve as their films make their way across various film festivals.
Directors who are representing Pakistan include Mehreen Jabbar, Sabiha Sumar, Shahbaz Sumar, Siraj ul Haque, Khalid Ahmed and Farjad Nabi/Meenu Gaur. From India, the filmmakers participating in this initiative include Aparna Sen, Ketan Mehta, Nikhil Advani, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Bejoy Nambiar, and Tanuja Chandra.
This project is also unique because this is the first time when Pakistani films will be released under an Indian banner and the two countries will come together on equal grounds. The 12 films will have diverse storylines and will touch upon different issues. It would be interesting to see what the directors have on plate for audiences all across as they come from two different backgrounds.
On the subject, ZEEL MD and CEO Punit Goenka told DNA India: “Getting 12 directors from either side of the border was a tall task. But it was heartwarming to see everyone’s desire to contribute towards peace and unity of both countries.”The eventual hope is to make this initiative an “annual or biennial cultural dialogue” which is definitely the way to go.
