| ECC body proposes five-day week to reduce CNG demand |

By Khalid Mustafa
ISLAMABAD: The inter-ministerial committee, constituted by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in its meeting on October 27 to make the gas load management plan acceptable to all the stakeholders, met here on Monday and proposed two weekly holidays to reduce the consumption of compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of increasing its price.
“The inter-ministerial committee, comprising federal ministers for petroleum and natural resources, finance, industries, agriculture, textile and water and power, and the Planning Commission deputy chairman has come up with this proposal, among others, to ensure a win-win situation for all the sectors of economy,” a senior official, who attended the meeting, told The News.
The country is likely to face a huge gas deficit of 750 mmcf to 1.1 bcf per day in the next three months of winter and the government will have no other option but to go for a massive gas loadshedding.
“The two weekly holidays will not only reduce the substantial demand of the CNG, but will also provide solace to the government to divert the gas to be saved to other sectors such as power and industrial sectors,” the official said and added that the proposal would also provide relief in managing the loadshedding of electricity across the country.
The committee also proposed decreasing the gas supply to all the sectors of economy in such a way that every sector could share the shortage and no sector could be affected at the most. “This will be a win-win situation for all the stakeholders,” the official said.
The committee, the official added, furnished the recommendation to increase the prices of gas appliances such as geysers, heaters and other items so that the people could be discouraged from purchasing them.
“The committee will submit these recommendations to the federal cabinet meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) for the approval of the gas load management plan,” the official said. The Petroleum and Natural Resources Ministry, in the ECC meeting held on October 27, had recommended the increase in the CNG price by Rs 109.20 mmbtu (million British thermal unit) to Rs 519.94 per mmbtu. It means the price of the CNG will be Rs 60.14 per kg for end consumer.
The ministry, in its second option, proposed the hike in the CNG price by Rs 252.73 per mmbtu that would have resulted in an increase of price of the CNG to Rs 69.14 per kg. Under its third option, it recommended an increase in the CNG price by Rs 386.41 per mmbtu and in this scenario, the CNG price in kilogram was worked out at Rs 78.88 per kg. In its fourth and last option, the ministry proposed a surge in the CNG price by Rs 51.94 from the existing price of Rs 427.15 mmbtu and in this case, the CNG price in kilogram was worked out at Rs 88.61 per kg.
