Mazharul Haq, Arbab Alamgir, Asma among 13 facing NAB probe

Alleged of corruption, possessing assets beyond known sources of income

ISLAMABAD: Top leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan are among those 13 personalities who have come under the radar of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which has launched inquiries against them for alleged corruption, corrupt practices and possessing assets beyond known sources of income.
The NAB has launched investigations against the top leader of the PPP from KP and ex-federal minister Arbab Alamgir, his spouse Asma Alamgir, ex-MNA, over alleged accumulation of assets beyond their known sources of income.
The decision was taken in the executive board meeting of the NAB which was headed by its Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry here on Wednesday.
Besides launching the probe against Arbab Alamgir and Asma Alamgir, the executive board of NAB also authorised an inquiry against Pir Mazharul Haq, former Sindh minister for education, and others. Pir Mazharul Haq was allegedly involved in illegal appointment of 13,000 teachers in the Education Department, Sindh, and thus causing a loss of Rs4 billion to Rs6 billion approximately to the national exchequer.
The NAB executive board also launched an inquiry against another PPP leader from Balochistan Muhammad Amin Umrani, ex-provincial minister for excise and taxation. In this case, the accused is alleged of accumulating assets beyond known sources of income. Amin Umrani was elected as a member of the Balochistan Assembly on the PPP ticket in the 2008 general elections and was disqualified for possessing a fake degree by the Balochistan High Court in 2012.
An inquiry was also authorised against Muhammad Ismail Gujjar, Chairman Quetta Development Authority (CDA) and ex-minister, for alleged illegal transfer of government land. Another inquiry was authorised against Dr Iftikhar Ahmed, Chairman PARC, and others. The accused is alleged of misusing authority and embezzlement of funds and thus causing a loss to the national exchequer.
The executive board also decided to authorise complaint verification against Dost Muhammad, Minister for Ushr and Zakat, Sindh. In this case, the accused is alleged of corruption, corrupt practices and accumulation of assets beyond known sources of income.

Third, complaint verification was authorised against officers/officials of University of Punjab for surrendering the land of the university without any lawful authority and thus causing loss to the national exchequer.
Fourth complaint verification was authorised against officers/officials of Ministry of Food Security and Research and in this case the accused were alleged of corruption/corrupt practices and causing loss to the national exchequer.
It was also decided to re-authorise inquiry against Air Cdre (R) Muhammad Junaid Ameen, Ex-DG CAA, AVM (R) Sajid Habib, Ex-Dy DG CAA, Air Cdre (R) Javed Khan, Ex-director technical CAA, Air Cdre (R) Khalid Alauddin Khan, ex-director technical CAA and others. In this case, the accused were alleged of irregular procurement without preparation and approval of PC-I and PC-II and award of contract through repeat order without tendering and causing a loss of Rs2.6 billion to the national exchequer
The Executive Board decided to authorise two investigations as first investigation was against Tahir Basharat Cheema, Ex-MD PEPCO, and Ibrahim Majoka, Ex-CEO Gepco, and in this case, the accused were alleged for illegal appointment of 437 employees in Gepco in violation of rules.
The NAB Executive Board authorised second investigation against officers/officials of Sindh Public Service Commission and others and in this case the accused were alleged of misuse of authority and illegal appointments of gazetted officers through CCE-2003/04.
The board also approved voluntary return application of private contractors of Rs17.371 million and rejected the voluntary return application of officers/officials of National Highway Authority (NHA) KP. An investigation for misuse of authority and causing loss to national exchequer has been authorised against them.
Meanwhile, the NAB Rawalpindi has arrested accused Rana Ghulam Murtaza, ex -additional secretary of Senate Secretariat, on charges of corruption, cheating public at large and misuse of authority.
Rana Ghulam Murtaza in connivance with other accused sold/transferred precious land at very low price against the purchasing price of land of Senate Housing Society. The accused misusing his authority sold/transferred land of Senate Housing Society situated in Mouza Kirpa, Pind Daya, Tehlyala and Gagri without any prior approval from circle registrar Islamabad and caused loss to the tune of Rs42.5 million to the society.
