Tashfeen Khalid Niaz, the Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) chairman, passed away due to heart failure on Thursday.
The deceased was at the forefront of the provincial government’s revenue collection drive.
Sources in the Sindh government said that Tashfeen Khalid Niaz had undergone angioplasty last week after which he had recovered his health; however, all of a sudden he suffered cardiac arrest, causing his death on Thursday evening.
The SRB was established a few years back by the Sindh government when after the Centre had devolved powers to the provinces to collect the general sales tax (GST) on services under the 7th National Finance Commission’s award of 2010.
The Sind government quite often took credit that its revenue collection drive by the SRB for collecting GST on services well surpassed the collection drives initiated by other provinces and even outshone performance of the Federal Board of Revenue.
In his condolence message, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah expressed his deep grief over the sad demise of the SRB chairman, saying that he was a thorough professional and good person.
The CM said that SRB chairman was committed with his profession and used to explore new avenues to strengthen his organisation.
His commitment could be assessed from the fact that about two days before his death he prepared a presentation for the government to show the SRB collection for framing the next budget estimates, the chief minister added.
He further said the vacuum created by Khalid Niaz’s sudden departure could not be filled.
“His services to strengthen the SRB and to strengthen financial health of the province will always be remembered.”
The CM prayed Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in the eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss.
